"The Playbook NIPSCO Hasn't Read"
Over 370,000 NIPSCO customers lost power when a derecho hit Northwest Indiana on August 11, 2026. Some Gary families waited 18 days for the lights to come back.
A new report, The Complete AI Playbook for NIPSCO, shows it didn't have to take that long. It catalogs 25 AI applications already proven at 11 utilities — National Grid cut tree-related outages 30%, PG&E cut ignitions nearly 50%, one utility improved reliability while cutting its budget. Applied to NIPSCO's own system, the math points to $9–13 million a year in savings.
Meanwhile, NIPSCO is already building sophisticated AI capacity planning — for Amazon and Google's data centers, with load projected to quadruple within a decade. It knows how to do this. It just hasn't pointed the technology at the neighborhoods that sat in the dark.
A lawsuit and a state investigation are both asking why. The playbook exists. Eleven utilities have proven it works. The only question is when NIPSCO starts reading.
