About the event

With the Tolleston community as our muse, and building on the brownfields data gathered during our GreenRoots Mapping project, you will learn how to capture neighborhood data, identify redevelopment opportunities, and shape redevelopment that prioritizes local ownership that reflects community values.

Why This Matters

For too long, outside developers and organizations have been deciding what goes into our neighborhoods. These workshops flip that script! When residents and stakeholders understand how to identify opportunities and define priorities, we don’t have to wait for outsiders to tell us what our future community should look like; we can lead it ourselves.

What You’ll Do

  • Help determine what matters most for neighborhood revitalization.

  • Explore a new GIS map showing brownfields and their relationships to community assets.

  • Help build a community‑driven scoring system to prioritize redevelopment.

  • Learn about tools and resources you can use in any neighborhood, not just Tolleston.

These sessions are for anyone ready to shape the future of their block, their neighborhood, and their city, on their own terms! Come learn how collaborations, community voice, and practical planning tools can power real transformations.

Delta Institute

A Midwest‑based nonprofit with more than 20 years of experience helping communities strengthen environmental resilience, plan for sustainable development, and turn data into action. Their team specializes in community engagement, climate planning, land use strategy, and practical tools that help neighborhoods shape their own futures. “We envision a region in which all communities and landscapes thrive…” (Delta Institute).

Indiana Brownfields Program (IBP)

A state resource that helps communities reduce environmental barriers to redevelopment. IBP provides environmental consulting, site reviews, and technical guidance to support safe cleanup and reinvestment in contaminated sites. Their mission is to help Indiana communities turn contaminated or underused properties into assets that support economic growth and public health.

KSU TAB (Kansas State University Technical Assistance to Brownfields)

A nationally recognized EPA‑funded program that provides free technical assistance to communities working to assess, clean up, and redevelop brownfield sites. They help residents, local governments, and grassroots organizations understand environmental data, navigate redevelopment processes, and build the capacity needed to lead community‑driven revitalization.
