About the event
At this dynamic workshop, you will learn to use free online tools from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State of Indiana to identify and assess the environmental conditions of properties you are considering for redevelopment. These tools can reveal past industrial uses, potential contamination, and known risks that may impact financing, construction, or long-term viability.
Why it matters:
Financial institutions now require environmental site assessments before approving mortgages or development loans.
Hidden contamination or deed restrictions can derail projects and add unexpected costs.
Knowing what’s beneath the surface helps you plan smarter, avoid delays, and protect your investment.
If you have an idea or a property you seek to develop, bring your laptop or tablet and get hands-on experience in conducting research. Also, consider sending a parcel number or site address to brownfields@startupgary.org with "SITE EXAMPLE" in the subject line ahead of the workshop, and we may choose your site as a live case study. To identify potential sites in your neighborhood, use the "Brownfield ID Form" and bring them to the next workshop for discussion.
Join us to gain the knowledge and tools to move forward with confidence—and help shape a cleaner, stronger future for Gary.
